SMIST board and STEM educators to discuss land purchase
On May 4, the board of directors of the Schoharie Mohawk Initiative for Science & Technology, a not-for-profit organization, will hold a forum, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Duanesburg YMCA.
In February, SMIST purchased an acre of land on Victoria Drive in Delanson next to the YMCA, the current home of SMIST. The purchase, funded by a donation from a member of the community, is the groundwork for SMIST’s plans to provide a center where students can participate in programs such as Lego League and SeaPerch.
YMCA employee Abigail Vanderveen has recently been named to the SMIST board to formalize the relationship between the YMCA and SMIST and ensure positive collaboration.
Local science, technology, engineering, and math (known as STEM) educators and volunteers have been invited to join the board on May 4 in a discussion about what programs to provide in the future, and how best to deliver them. The parcel of land will also be discussed, as SMIST wants to encourage community involvement in how to best move forward.
