Last Friday evening, March 10, Voorheesville Elementary held a Dance-a-thon at the High school to help raise funds for the new playground.

Weeeeee! Four Voorheesville Elementary students spin around while the music plays on Friday evening’s dance-a-thon. The students danced in teams — 34 in all — with themes and costumes to match — one group, for example, wore rabbit ears and pom-pom tails. Volunteers are trying to raise $200,000 to replace the 25-year-old playground at the elementary school.

Bird’s eye view: Parents watch from the sidelines at Friday’s dance-a-thon as a group of yellow-shirted kids dance out front. Behind them, another group sports glowing necklaces, while off to the side, a girl pirouettes in solitude.

A must-have at a dance-a-thon is a conga line. These Voorheesville Elementary students formed one early in the night on Friday evening. The Voorheesville Community and School Foundation had donated $10,000 for the $200,00 playground project and offered to match up to $15,000 raised at the dance-a-thon. “Students alone raised $15,000 in pledges,” Jeffrey Vivenzio, the elementary principal, told the school board Monday night, “putting us at $48,000 in one night,” he said to applause.
