Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Price Chopper Pharmacy has partnered with the Guilderland Public Library to offer both the flu and shingles vaccines at the library on Thursday, Oct. 10, from noon to 4 pm.

Did you know that one in three people will experience shingles in their lifetime? As you are probably aware, shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus lays dormant in your body and may re-erupt as Shingles later in life. It can result in a painful rash, blisters, and possibly other complications. Your best prevention is to get vaccinated. The FDA-approved vaccine, Zostavax, is for individuals aged 50 or older and is covered by most health insurance and Medicare Part D plans. Age requirements may apply in some cases, check with your individual plan.

The same coverage applies for the flu vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control recommends for everyone 6 months or older. For this clinic, Price Chopper can offer flu vaccines to anyone 19 and older. Younger patients need to see their doctor.

You must register to get vaccinated; call 456-2400, ext. 2, or register online at bit.ly/Shingles-Flu-Clinic. After you register, Price Chopper Pharmacy will contact you for more information on your insurance coverage, and they can tell you the cost of the vaccines if you do not have insurance.

 First Friday Family Film

Set in a bustling bird city on the edge of the majestic Victoria Falls, the next First Friday Family Film, showing at 7 p.m., on Oct. 4, is the story of Kai. This naïve but high-spirited young falcon travels to the bird city of Zambezia where he discovers the truth about his origins and, in defending the city, learns how to be part of a community.

The film is rated G, and is a little less than 90 minutes long.  The free popcorn is rated Good, and the Helderberg Room’s big screen is an ideal place to watch Kai do his thing.

 Sensory story time

The next Sensory Story time will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m.  Held on the second Wednesday of every month, these sessions are designed for children with autism spectrum disorder, and a parent or caregiver. We share simple stores, and engage in sensory integration through games and crafts. Registration is required, so call 456-2400, ext. 4 to attend.

 Tweens and parents reading together

Students in grades 5 through 8 are invited to come to the library on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m., to participate in National Bullying Prevention Month by joining the parent/tween book discussion of Bystander. Local author James Preller will join us to explore the key issue raised in his acclaimed novel: How can a kid stop being a bystander without becoming a victim?

Registration is required. Call 456-2400, ext, 4.

Don’t worry if you missed the last Better Books Sale. The library has a whole new selection for you to choose from at the next sale on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Novels and classics, paperbacks and hardcovers; there’s surely something that will catch your eye.
