Taxes to go up 5 percent in Voorheesville

VOORHEESVILLE — The village board is set to adopt a $2.05 million budget at its regular meeting later this month. The proposed budget includes a 5-percent hike in taxes, and 2-percent salary increases for employees.

The budget is down from $2.122 million last year. The village consolidated its court with the town of New Scotland earlier in the fiscal year, saving about $20,000 in salaries. The elimination of a part-time employee’s salary brought the reduction to $24,500, according to Clerk-Treasurer Linda Pasquali.

The proposed tax rate is $1.255 per $1,000 of assessed property value, up 6 cents per $1,000. Pasquali said that taxes based on the village’s average home worth $200,000 will go up nearly $12 next year. According to the budget proposed, the board plans to freeze village taxes over the next two years.

All village employees receive 2-percent salary increases under the proposed budget. Last year, all employees were slated to receive the same rate increase, but village board members opted out. This year, Mayor Robert Conway will earn $14,413, up from $14,131. Trustees will earn $6,306 each, up from $6,182.

The village budget for 2014-15 includes funds for a Department of Public Works truck. A plow for the truck may be purchased with leftover funds from the current year, Pasquali said. The village went over its allotment for overtime costs, she said, but $14,000 was left over in the village’s budget for road salt.

“Street lights went up more than $20,000,” Pasquali said about budget increases. Contractual street lighting costs rose from $70,000 to $90,000.

“Nice job, everybody,” said Mayor Conway.

Re-organizational meeting

At its annual re-organizational meeting, the board:

— Swore in Conway and trustees Richard Berger and Jack Stevens. Board member liaison positions in the community were kept the same;

— Agreed to move its December meeting up one week to Dec. 16; and

— Named First Niagara Bank to receive village financial deposits.
