Jane Harrington

GUILDERLAND — Jane “Mitch” Harrington, a dedicated volunteer who enjoyed the outdoors, died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 64.

Mrs. Harrington was born on Sept. 27, 1950, in Schenectady, the daughter of the late Stanley and Roberta (née Jette) Mitchell.

She graduated from Burnt Hills High School and attended the state’s University at Plattsburgh. There, she met Carol Szatkowski. The two friends worked at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, for the Szatkowski family, before the course was sold to the town of Guilderland.

She developed a lifelong friendship, which she cherished, with Carol Szatkowski Cowan, who died before her.

Mrs. Harrington was a Civil Service Employees’ Association member and worked for the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles Traffic Violations Bureau.

She lived in Guilderland for the last 30 years.

“Jane was a very giving person who volunteered her time with many organizations through the years,” wrote her family in a tribute.

She was a Sunday school teacher at the St. Boniface Episcopal Church, a teaching assistant in the Guilderland elementary schools, a volunteer with the Center for the Disabled in Albany, and an adult literacy tutor.

She loved camping and kayaking in the Adirondack and Catskill mountains, taking trips to the ocean, working in her flower gardens, and spending time with the family at the Harringtons’ camp on Efner Lake in Corinth, her family wrote in a tribute.

Mrs. Harrington is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Jeffrey Harrington; her cherished sons, Daniel Harrington, and his wife, Corinne, and Sean Harrington; her brother, Gregory Mitchell; her sister, Karen Pitman, and her husband, Paul; her mother-in-law, Shirley (née Merriman) Harrington; and a large, loving, extended family.

A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends at a later date. Arrangements are by the Newcomer Canon Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Literacy New York Greater Capital Region, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, New York 12205.
