Doris M. Relyea
A loving and caring woman, Doris M. Relyea died Monday, Sept. 22, 2014. She was 99.
Born Oct. 6, 1914, Mrs. Relyea moved to Voorheesville when she was very young, after her father took a job as a telegrapher in the old railroad station.
She graduated from the eighth grade at Voorheesville, the highest the school had at the time, and then graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1933 before attending Mildred Elley Business School.
Mrs. Relyea was a stenographer for several years before working in the Voorheesville school cafeteria in the early 1950s; she worked in the elementary and high school through the early 1970s.
She was active in the old Presbyterian Church in Voorheesville, where she was married in 1944, and then the Voorheesville United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school in both and was active into her 80s, visiting nursing home residents with the minister.
Mrs. Relyea was a member of the Voorheesville Fire Department Auxiliary and New Scotland Seniors.
“Doris loved people — she loved and cared deeply for her family, her many dear friends and neighbors, and her community,” her family wrote in a tribute.
Her husband of 58 years, Edward, died before her, as did her parents, John and Dora Hodges; her sister, Olive, and her husband, Paul Heisler; and her brothers, John and Elmer.
She is survived by her son, John Relyea; nephew, James Heisler, and his wife Jackie; grandnephew, Daniel; grandniece, Julie; great-grandniece, Eden, and great-grandnephew, Logan.
“Doris leaves us with her favorite Bible verse,” the family wrote, “John 3:16 : For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
