“You never rezone to benefit an individual,” Weston said. “You have to rezone to conform to the comprehensive plan.”

Supervisor Kenneth Runion said this week that the town had granted Verizon a franchise agreement so that it could install utilities in the right-of-way.

“Ideally, the land would not be used for development at all,” said Hawver. “But, what they’ve proposed is a reasonable compromise.”

The school district here, like those across the state, is facing a new budget year without the ability to raise taxes unless it can get a supermajority of voters to approve a hike.

Plans are progressing to house outside pre-kindergarten programs in extra rooms at Altamont Elementary, Pine Bush Elementary, and Farnsworth Middle School.
