Demarco Bryant, a mail carrier with the Altamont post office, makes a stop on Maple Avenue Wednesday. He is driving a Next-Generation Delivery Vehicle, known as an NGDV, which he says can run on gas or electricity. Bryant also said that Altamont and Voorheesville are the first post offices in the area to get NGDVs. According to the United States Postal Service, as of Dec. 1, over 35,000 of the new vehicles were on the road. In a $9.6 million upgrade of its delivery fleet, USPS plans to have 106,000 new vehicles by 2028. USPS says, “The new vehicles offer better visibility, ergonomic seating, air conditioning, safety features and user-friendly operations, along with increased cargo capacity to allow more packages to be carried per trip, boosting environmental and operating efficiency.”
