The Flying Dutchman had a haunted start to the basketball season as both the boys’ and girls’ teams lost this week in their first games. The boys lost in a close contest against Schenectady, 86 to 82, on Saturday at Schenectady High School while the girls played Niskayuna at home on Tuesday, losing 78 to 66.

Sharpshooter Valencia Fontenelle-Posson, bottom left, drains a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Fontenelle-Posson led the team with 33 points. She was honored at the start of the game with a commemorative basketball, presented by her coaches, for becoming the second girl in Guilderland basketball history to score over 1,000 points. Fontenelle-Posson reached that milestone last season, when she was only a sophomore, during her team’s sectional loss to Shenendehowa.
