Photos: Guilderville Makes A Splash

The Guilderville girls swim team took home two Section 2 champion titles at sectionals at Shenendehowa last week, and sending 8 to the state competition.

The pool was warm, but the Guilderville girls swim team made it boil as a sectional runner-up, with 322 points, the team’s first plaque since 1989. Guilderville’s Evanna Peng takes the Section 2 diving title last Thursday at Shenendehowa High School as her coach, John Urbanski, and her teammates are all smiles.

Championship dive: Peng won with a score of 510.35 as she performs her last dive with grace in the final round. Guilderville had three divers — Lindsay Griffith, Eliana Wallock, and Peng— in the top 10 in Section 2.

Qualifying for states: Stephanie Erickson swims in the 200-yard freestyle. Here, Erickson competes last Friday afternoon — she won her heat in the preliminary round and finished second in the finals, with a time of 1:56.16.

Competition is intense: Guilderville’s Sydney Steinhardt, background, battles Andrianna Wise from Saratoga last Friday in the 100-yard freestyle. Steinhardt finished in 13th place on Saturday with a time of 56.73 seconds.

Her arm looks like a waterfall: Guilderville’s Kasey Keaney swims the backstroke portion of the 200-yard individual medley; Keaney finished fifth in the finals with a time of 2:13.18. She qualified for states in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.55. Belen Marriaga won the Section 2 title in the 100-yard fly. Marriaga, Keaney, Steinhardt, Peng, Erickson, Erin Wadsworth, Jordyn Sommo, and Laura Waltz will represent Guilderville at the state swim meet on Nov. 18 and 19 at Ithaca College.
