Photos: Racing to States for two local athletes

On Friday late morning and early afternoon - Guilderland, Voorheesville, and BKW - cross country teams all vied for a chance to run in this Saturday's state competition down in Sunken Meadow State Park in the Section 2 championships at Saratoga State Park in Saratoga Springs.

All smiles: Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Michelle Puzulis shows off her fourth-place ribbon after she qualified for the state competition on Long Island this Saturday. Puzulis finished with a time of 19:16.98. The BKW girls’ team finished in seventh place with 161 points.

Splashing through mud: Guilderland’s Nicholas Soldevere, front, and Noah Tindale squish through the soggy grass toward the finish of the Section 2, Class A sectional race Friday afternoon. Soldevere finished eighth in 15:39.87 and Tindale finished ninth in 15:46.49. The boys’ team finished in third with 81 points.

Voorheesville’s Evan Ensslin sprints to the finish line in the Section 2, Class C sectional on Friday afternoon at Saratoga State Park in Saratoga Springs. Ensslin finished in second place, with a time of 16:26.06, qualifying for state competition this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island. The boys’ team finished fourth with 108 points.

Wet conditions: Guilderland’s Gabby Cusato runs toward the finish on the wet and muddy final stretch of the Class A Section 2 sectionals at Saratoga State Park in Saratoga Springs on Friday morning. Cusato finished in 24th with a time of 19:07.79. The Guilderland girls’ team finished in seventh with 204 points.

Running together: Voorheesville’s Mariem Sayahi, left, and Julia Young follow Emily Wall of Ichabod Crane toward the finish in the Class C sectional race. Young finished 22nd with a time of 21:06.84 and Sayahi finished 23rd with a time of 21:08.01. Voorheesville, as a team, finished in sixth place with 158 points.

Running alone: Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Brandon Bungay nears the finish line in the Class D sectional race. Bungay finished 24th with a time of 18:58.16; his brother Ryan finished 64th with a time of 20:58.22.
