The Blackbirds wanted make deep runs on the pitch and on the gridiron in sectional play. The girls’ soccer team played well deep into the Class B sectionals with a convincing 5-to-0 win last Thursday at home. Then the Birds won on Saturday in the quarterfinals but fell on Tuesday evening, 6 to 4, in overtime to Schalmont at Lansingburgh High School. For the football team, it was the second year in a row that the Blackbirds lost against Holy Trinity. Last year, the Birds fell without scoring, 42 to 0. This year, the Birds battled hard but lost, 35 to 18.

Carrying his team: Voorheesville’s Ian Owens did everything he could to help his Blackbirds advance in the Class C quarterfinals and upset the second-seeded Holy Trinity on Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady. Owens had 10 completions on 17 attempts with 184 yards and one interception. He did most of his damage with his legs with 108 yards on 21 carries.
