Tommy Polito II, the grandson of Tommy Polito, peels off a tablecloth to show two photos: One commemorates Tommy Polito’s Tavern, which formerly stood on the site, and the other is of John Green, a 1971 Guilderland graduate who used to hang out there with his classmates and who has written a book about Polito’s Tavern. Polito’s nephew, James Arrant, helped with the unveiling.

Words from afar: Joe Carpenter, right, reads a letter from John Green, who graduated from Guilderland High School in the Class of 1971 and now lives in Arizona. Green has written books that include reminiscences of Polito’s Tavern. Jim Rulison, left, listens along with others who gathered Saturday at the new Cumberland Farms to unveil a plaque, commemorating Polito’s.

John Green, who graduated from Guilderland in 1971, frequented Politos Tavern, a popular high school hangout, in his youth. He has since wrritten a book about the long-gone tavern. Cumberland Farms has recently built at the site, where routes 20 and 146 intersect.

Celebrating old times: Janith Watson, center, takes video of Joe Carpenter speaking about Polito’s Tavern, which once stood where the new Cumberland Farms is today, at the intersection of routes 146 and 20 in Guilderland. Standing next to Watson are Don Albright and a woman who used to work at Polito’s. Behind them is a painting reminiscent of the tavern.
