Side view: Amy Martin and her father stained in two different shades the cedar planks to be used as siding, and then instructed the carpenters to put them on “haphazardly,” to achieve a more naturally variegated effect.

“I love design,” said Amy Martin, “whether it’s a classroom or a home.” Daughter Josie, 7, shown here getting ready for soccer practice, loves it too, she said.

“Life is beautiful”: Amy Martin bought this photo in the West Village in Manhattan, drawn by the saying, she said, which she is happy to look at and be reminded of each day.

Stained-glass shower: Two pieces of stained glass — there is another, on the opposite side — purchased at a flea market in Sarasota, Florida were integrated into an outdoor shower. There are also two showers, and a bathtub, inside the house.

“I’m a really big bird fan,” said Thatcher, whose room features eagles on the wall and the headboard. Josh Martin made all the bedsteads in the house.

Josie’s favorite part of the house, she said, is her room. Here, a hanging canopy encloses all of her American Girl doll toys. Josie’s mother drew the trunk of the tree on the wall and then Josie helped her make the leaves, dipping the bottom of glass jars into paint and using them as stamps.
