Shout it out: Principal Alicia Rizzo of Lynnwood Elementary School is back after being absent for the last half of the past school year as she was treated for breast cancer. She led the school’s first Share and Celebrate assembly of the school year on, Sept. 20, including reading to the children a picture book called “All Are Welcome Here” by Alexandra Penfold that celebrates diversity. Each time Rizzo came to the tagline “All are welcome here,” she had the kids yell it out with her.

In the pink: Principal Alicia Rizzo hugs second-grader Shawn Marcella after a school assembly on Sept. 20. Like many of the teachers and students that day, Rizzo wears a pink T-shirt with the logo “Ribbons for Rizzo,” celebrating her return to the school after battling breast cancer. The Parent Teacher Association is selling the shirts to support Rizzo and show her how much it cares, said the PTA’s vice president, Kim Matthews. All proceeds from T-shirt sales will be used to start a fund to replace the older of Lynnwood’s two playgrounds.
