Photos: Dutch Girls Race to Victory

Voorheesville’s cross-country team hosted its annual Blackbird Invitational on Saturday morning at the Stephen P. Wallace Park on Swift Road. This year, the invitational had a record 32 teams competing in the two division races. Voorheesville and Berne-Knox-Westerlo competed in Division 2.

The Guilderland girls, competing in Division 1, took the division title with 52 points. Kate Scanlon led the Dutch team by finishing third overall in the 5K race with a time of 21:01.02.

Catching up: Voorheesville’s Mariem Sayahi ran well to lead her team, finishing second with a time of 20:04.88. The Blackbirds girls’ team finished third with 75 points in division two.

For the young boys’ team, Sam Wikstrom, Ethan Hansen, and Nick Reilly race off the starting line. Hansen finished 59th with a time of 22:24.63, Reilly came in 63rd with a time of 22:52.06, and Wikstrom finished 69th with a time of 23:29.82. The team came in last with a score of 326.

Breezing along: BKW’s Michelle Puzulis races toward the finish line, coming in fourth with a time of 21:11.27; her team finished in seventh place finish with 153 points.

The boys’ team was led by Ryan Bungay who beat out his brother, Brandon, right at the end of the 3.1-mile run. Ryan finished 38th with a time of 21:00.92, and Brandon came in 39th place with a time of 21:01.90. The team finished in ninth, out of 14 teams, with 261 points.

Pigtail flying: Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Michelle Puzulis runs smoothly during the second lap in the Varsity Division 2 race. Puzulis finished fourth with a time of 21:11.27.

Running with competition: Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Brandon Bungay exits a small wooded area of the 3.1-mile course along with runners from Johnstown and Ichabod Crane runner. Bungay finished 39th with a time of 21:01.90.
