Photos: Birds & Bears Mix It Up

From the opening whistle, the game was physical and hard-fought between Voorheesville and the Albany Academy for Girls at Clayton A. Bouton High School last Thursday afternoon. After a brief 30-minute weather break before the game, referees’ whistles sounded frequently for infractions ranging from shoves to hard play. Late in the game, Academy went down from 11 players to 10 because of a red card, evicting a player. In the end, the Blackbirds won, 5 to 1.

The Blackbirds’ goalkeeper, Leah Weber catches a shot from Academy in the first half. Weber made three saves in the first half and Maggie Thayer played goalie during the second half, making seven saves.

Physical play: Voorheesville’s Jayden Kelley, left, goes for the ball as Albany Academy for Girls’ Izzy Woods, with a clenched fist, throws her elbow into Kelley in the second half. The referee called a foul and gave Woods a yellow card. A few minutes later, Woods got another yellow card, which disqualified her for the rest of the game. Kelley had a goal in the game.
