Thompson’s Lake Campground near East Berne — part of Thacher State Park — held its annual “trick-or-treating in August” event — when campers put up Halloween decorations and their children go from one campsite to the next, asking for candy — on Aug. 20. This display of ghastly and hungry plastic creatures was created by East Berne firefighters Lee Wright and Joanne Wright, with help from their friends, Jim and Melissa Harnett, who were staying at the adjacent campsite. Each year this small group of Halloween-loving firefighters rents campsites side-by-side for this event and combines forces to decorate the entire front of their site. “We always add a little bit every year, to make it a little more crazy for everybody,” said Melissa Harnett.
