Let it snow! Fifth-graders from Altamont and Lynnwood elementary schools visited the Guilderland High School auditorium on June 1 to learn from Annette Sebuyira’s chemistry students about the wonders of science. These girls enjoy making snow — a demonstration of a polymer that can absorb 30 times its weight in water.

Young scientists: Caroline Murphy, at right, a Guilderland High School student in Annette Sebuyira’s Advanced Placement, college-level chemistry class, shows fifth-graders how to make density columns. Density is a measure of how much mass is contained in a given unit of volume. Lighter liquids, like ethanol or water, are less dense than heavier liquids like honey or corn syrup. The layers of liquids can be carefully stacked.
