Guilderland’s highway department on June 6 tore down the McKownville home that had been gutted by fire on Jan. 24.

The town tried for months to reach members of the Morrissey-Sawyer family, to encourage them to either rebuild or demolish the structure, which stood just feet from the house next door. In April, Building and Zoning Inspector Jacqueline Coons asked the town board to order the homeowners to take steps to address building code violations. In early May, the board voted to require the owner to fix violations, or the town would step in.

With a giant Cat and Deere that dwarf the shell of a house at 7 Ayre Drive, members of Guilderland’s highway department prepare, on June 6, to tear down the home. A fire on Jan. 24 burned the home and left four of the seven residents, from the Morrissey-Sawyer family, rescued by firefighters, in critical condition. All have since recovered. A half-dozen neighbors watched on Monday as the house was reduced to rubble; one of them applauded.
