The Guilderland baseball and softball teams along with Voorheesville baseball took to their respective diamonds to battle for sectional titles this past week with mixed results.

The Blackbirds traveled to Mechanicville on Friday afternoon but fell in the Class B first-round sectionals, 3 to 0. Nick Angelo dives to make a huge catch in the bottom of the first inning for the Blackbirds. Angelo was hitless at the plate.

Keeping the Birds in: Voorheesville's Kellen Chowenhill was on the bump for the Blackbirds. Chowenhill pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking five.

The Guilderland softball team traveled Wednesday for its Class AA softball quarterfinal against Bethlehem and fell, 9 to 7. Ashley Shean, eyes down the runner, after fielding a ground ball, gets ready to throw to first for an out. Shean had one hit in four at-bats.

Big hits: Guilderland's Colette Cohen swings her bat in the first inning and just misses on the hit. Cohen had two hits in three at-bats and had two runs-batted-in.

The Guilderland baseball team started its Class AA sectional quarterfinal by winning, 5 to 0, at home on Saturday against Colonie at Dutchman field. Pumped up was Adam Webber as he shows his emotions after scoring in the fourth inning for the Dutch. Webber had two hits in two at-bats, scoring two runs and had a RBI. Guilderland’s next game is at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy tonight at 7 p.m. against top-seeded Niskayuna.

Getting on: Voorheesville’s Max Sapienza steals second base in the third inning, sliding in safely as he struck the Mechanicville’s second baseman’s glove and the ball went toward centerfield. Sapienza had a hit in three at-bats, including that stolen base.
