Back straight, eyes focused: The pitch is cast toward home plate during the game among 7- to 9-year-olds from Berne-Knox-Westerlo and Greenville on May 20. “No score was kept that game. The girls are learning the basics of softball for now,” BKW Little League coach Chris Curvin wrote in an e-mail. “As usual, at that age, they improve so quickly, it has been a lot of fun. We were playing on the field we renovated with the Valley Cats early in the season. It came out great and has been the perfect middle ground now that we are playing Greenville. Best of all, the kids love it.”

Watching, a large brown Teddy Bear sits behind the fence at the Westerlo Little League field. Player No. 7 from the Greenville Napa Auto softball team runs across the evenly cut and brilliant green sod in the town park on May 20. The field was refurbished this year, including a rebuilt pitcher’s mound, when Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League was chosen in a contest held by the Tri-City ValleyCats minor-league baseball team in Troy.
