Showing love: Students in Michelle Van Patten’s second-grade class at Berne-Knox-Westerlo huddle around Maggie, a 3-year old black Labrador retriever, before Wednesday morning’s visit from Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy to honor Maggie the county’s Citizen of the Month. Maggie was also honored with a literal dog tag engraved in her honor.

Eyes on the prize: Maggie, a therapy dog, looks to her owner, Dr. Katrina Emmerich, a school psychologist at Berne-Knox-Westerlo, as she and the second-graders in Michelle Van Patten’s class wait for a ceremony to begin that will honor Maggie for her work helping students cope with stress and making them feel good about themselves.

Watching over her students: As second-grade teacher Michelle Van Patten reads and school psychologist Dr. Katrina Emmerich, right, listens to the story along with the students, Maggie looks out, ready to calm anyone who needs it.
