Photos: Guilderland Football beats Shaker to Win First-ever Championship

On Friday, April 30, the Guilderland Dutchmen football team took on a usual foe in the Class AA playoffs: Shaker. The game lived up to the hype, with both teams the number one seeds in their respective divisions. The Dutch trailed by a touchdown with six-minutes left and drove all the way to a win. The defense played its part in the 21-to-20 victory, the school’s first-ever championship.

Goal battle: Holding the ball, Guilderland’s Logan Broomhall (12) attempts to dive over the goal-line to score a touchdown in the second quarter as his offensive line holds Shaker’s defense away. Broomhall ran for two touchdowns and threw for one. He had 11 completions on 21 attempts for 99 yards, and had two interceptions and ran 10 rushes for 34 yards.

Fighting for an extra yard: Guilderland Jaxson Wicks tries to get a few more yards after making the catch but Shaker’s Daniel Iyok wraps his arms around Wicks as Iyok’s teammate Matt Calicchia comes to help. Wicks had three catches for 27 yards.

That’s a score: Guilderland’s Marcus McClaine falls over the goal-line to score a touchdown as Shaker’s Zack Mein (15) and Matt Calicchia (6) tackle McClaine which was too late. McClaine had two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown and had 15 carries for 79 rushing yards.

Oh yeah! Guilderland’s Colin Lynch (69) and Zachary Swint (76) leap up high for a chest bump as Guilderland scored the game-winning touchdown in the Class AA championship on Friday night at Shaker High School in Colonie.

And that’s a wrap: Guilderland’s Patrick Bruno jumps up to get both his hands on the game-winning interception with 20 seconds left in the championship game at Shaker High School and it saw the Dutch win it’s first-ever football championship in school history with a 21-to-20 win on Friday night.
