Photos: Striving For States 2019

The next step for each of the athletes on the Guilderland, Voorheesville, and Berne-Knox-Westerlo indoor track teams is to compete in this Sunday’s state qualifiers for a chance to head to the state competition on March 2 on Long Island. The athletes competed in the Section 2 championships in their respective divisions: Guilderland in Division 1, and Voorheesville and BKW in Division 4. The Guilderland girls finished third with 70 points, the boys were seventh with 26; the Voorheesville girls finished 13th with 2 points, the boys were eighth with 14 points; the BKW girls were 14th with 1 point while the BKW boys didn’t score any.

Flying high: Guilderland's Isabella Bruno competes in the girls’ high jump. Bruno finished second at a height of 5 feet, 2 inches. She won sectional titles again in the long jump and triple jump.

Clearing it easily: Guilderland's Molly DiCaprio won the sectional title in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.27.

Looking ahead: Guilderland's Gabby Cusato sprints down the backstretch in the 4 by 800-meter event. Cusato’s relay team finished fourth with a time of 10:21.46.

Moving fast: Voorheesville's Yeta Duffy takes the baton from his teammate Ryan Logan in the 4 by 200-meter relay race. Voorheesville’s relay team finished eighth with a time of 1:53.76.

Hand off: Voorheesville's Sophia Stampalia passes the baton to Jazmin Wieczorek as they run in the girls 4 by 200-meter relay race. The Voorheesville girls’ team finished sixth with a time of 2:08.96.

Best foot forward: Voorheesville's Sophia Stampalia clears a hurdle in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing 10th with a time of 11.01 and is the only qualifier for the Blackbirds for a chance for the state competition on Sunday.

Running easy: BKW's Michelle Puzulis won her heat easily in the girls’ 1000-meter run. Puzulis finished sixth overall with a time of 3:27.45, scoring the one point for BKW.

Barely clearing: Voorheesville’s Julia Young competes in the Section 2, Division 4 pole vault on Sunday morning. Young wasn’t able to clear the 7-foot bar.

Sky high: Voorheesville Blackbird Colin Prancl flies past the bar in the pole-vault event. Prancl finished fifth at a height of 8 feet, 6 inches.

Looking forward: BKW’s Thomas Bungay prepares to throw during the Section 2, Division 4 championships in the shot put event on Sunday morning. Bungay finished in 13th with a distance of 28 feet, 2.50 inches.

Launch angle: Voorheesville’s Ethan Hartmann prepares to put his shot in the Section 2, Division 4 competition on Sunday morning inside the bubble at the University at Albany. Hartmann finished in fourth with a distance of 36 feet, 00.75 inches. Hartmann also competed in the high jump, finishing 12th, and the long jump, finishing 6th.

Full extension: Guilderland’s Jordon Kimbrough competes in the boys’ triple jump on Monday morning in the Section 2, Division 1 championships. Kimbrough finished second at a distance of 44 feet, 8 inches and then finished in seventh in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 5.25 inches.

Running hard: Guilderland’s Nicholas Soldevere competes in the third heat of the Section 2, Division 1 1000-meter run. Soldevere finished second overall with a time of 2:39.64.
