The weather was brutal on Saturday as the Guilderland varsity cross-country ski team competed against 11 other schools, some with multiple teams, at Queensbury High School for the Queensbury Relays.

The skiers faced an air temperature of 3 below zero with wind chill making it feel colder still. If the temperature dipped to 11 below, the races would have been called off, a coach said, so as not to endanger the athletes.

Snow mustache: Guilderland's Kailyn DiBianco for the last leg as frost forms on her face. DiBianco’s time was 16:00; the girls’ team finished in 24th place with an overall time of 58:23.5.

Chilly temps: Guilderland’s Jaziah Nichter glides out of woods towards the finish line to tag her teammate during the first leg of her relay. Nichter had a time of 24:17.4 and her relay team had an overall time 58:23.5, finishing in 24th place.

The boys skied hard, too, and showed their grit in the harsh weather. Guilderland’s Craig Gehres is in the thick of things as he pushes off, competing with other skiers on the 3K course. Gehres’s time was 12:02, and his relay team finished in 12th place with an overall time of 37:05.7.

Gliding through the snow: Guilderland’s Brian Chew skis the third leg of Guilderland’s top relay team during the Queensbury Relays last Saturday at Queensbury High School. Chew finished with a time of 12:47 and the relay team finished in 12th place with an overall time of 38:18.5.
