The Guilderland Senior Services is offering the following activities the week of May 30. Call the senior office at 356-1980, ext. 1048 with any questions or for information.

— Monday: Town hall closed for Memorial Day.;

— Tuesday: Strong Bones Plus at 9 a.m., luncheon of herb baked cod loin or cold plate at 11:30 a.m., and bingo/Rummikub at 12:30 p.m.;

— Wednesday: Scheduled shopping, senior strength and balance at 9 a.m., Strong Bones Plus and senior fitness at 10:30 a.m., needlecraft at 1 p.m., and Strong Bones Plus at 1:30 p.m.; 

— Thursday: Scheduled shopping, Silver Sneakers and Strong Bones Plus at 9 a.m., Mahjong and Pinochle at 12:30 p.m.; and

— Friday: Scheduled shopping,  painting at 10 a.m., quilting and intermediate Bridge at 1 p.m.

Art show and reception

The town of Guilderland Senior Artists League will be exhibiting their work at the Guilderland Public Library June 3 through 24. You are cordially invited to the opening reception of the exhibit on Sunday, June 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Guilderland Public Library located at 2228 Western Avenue. Light refreshments will add to the festivity. 

Fashion show and luncheon

Please plan to join us at noon for the fashion show and luncheon at Colonie Golf & Country Club, 141 Maple Rd. Route 85A in Voorheesville on Tuesday, June 28..

The fashions are by Fashions by Liz’s Closet and are modeled by our senior ladies.

Your luncheon entrée choices are: baked boneless pork chops with apples in a red wine reduction; broiled haddock Veronique served with lemons, Panko and white grapes in white wine sauce; and chicken Marsala floured dredged and pan roasted with mushrooms served in marsala wine sauce. All entrees include: field green salad, raspberry sorbet with wafer cookie for dessert, and coffee/tea beverage. The cost is $24 per person.

Tickets are available in the senior office from through June 17. Please make checks payable to “Town of Guilderland.” Remember to indicate your luncheon choice and if transportation is needed.

Learn about Medicare

Will you soon be 65? On Thursday,  July 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., come learn how Medicare works.  You will be informed of all the factors that you should consider when making your choices. Are you already in Medicare but still having questions about your coverage options? There are Medicare counselors trained to help you understand your choices and options. Attend a presentation designed to provide you with an understanding of Medicare and the choices available to you.

Having trouble paying your Medicare premium or related medical expenses?  Find out if you may qualify for Federal assistance with your medical expenses. Please call the office to register for a presentation by July 7.

Substitute drivers needed

If you are interested in volunteering “once in awhile” for about an hour-and-a-half, this is an opportunity for you.  Meals are delivered weekdays to Guilderland and Altamont residents. Please call 356-1980 ext. 1095 for further information.

Summer exercise classes

Registration for the summer classes will be held on June 13, 15 and 16.

Classes being offered are:  

— Senior  fitness on Monday and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.;

— Senior strength and balance on Wednesdays at 9 a.m.; and

— Silver Sneakers on Thursdays at 9 a.m.

The fall class registration will be held on August 8 and 10

June 22 is our first trip to the  Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The conservatory features  an 8,000-square-foot  indoor conservatory home to nearly 4,000 exotic and domestic butterflies in a tropical environment.  A buffet lunch will follow at Chandler’s Restaurant at the Yankee Candle Co., where you may take the time to visit the candle shop.  

The cost is $60 and the  deadline for purchasing a ticket is May 13. Departure time is 8:30 a.m. and we return at approximately 5:30 p.m.

On July 25 we have a Lake George lunch cruise. Welcome aboard the Lac du Saint Sacrement,  the largest ship on the inland waters of New York State. At noon, enjoy a nice lunch and entertainment in the elegant dining room while cruising by beautiful mountain wilderness on the crystal clear waters of Lake George. Every seat has a view of the lake. The cost is  $52, and the  deadline for purchasing a ticket is June 10. Departure time is 10 a.m. and we return at approximately 3 p.m.

On Aug. 2 we travel to Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts  for  Tanglewood on Parade with the Boston Symphony Orchestra,  Boston Pops Orchestra,  and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. Stephane Deneve, Giancario Guerrero, and John Williams are the conductors. The program  includes Ravel, La Valse, and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Fireworks will follow the concert. Shed tickets are $48. Deadline for purchasing a ticket is June 17.  Departure time is 6 p.m. and we return at approximately 11:30 p.m.

On Sept. 14  we will travel to The Beeches Buffet Dinner Theatre in Rome, New York.  We will see the  musical “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” .  The cost is  $70 and the deadline for tickets is August 5. Our departure is 9:15 a.m. and we will return at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Then on Oct. 5 we will go to the Lake George Dinner Theatre.  Kathleen Clark’s “Southern Comforts” follows a budding romance between Gus, a crusty and cantankerous New Jersey widower and Amanda, a feisty, saucy, and outgoing Southern widow.  Their funny, awkward, and enchanting romance is filled with sweet surprise and unpredictable tribulation.

Please indicate your lunch choice:

— Medallions of beef with Bordelaise Sauce served with roasted potatoes;

— Char-grilled chicken breast with homemade apple relish, lemon vinaigrette served with roasted potatoes (gluten free);

— Broiled Atlantic salmon with lemon, white wine, and caper sauce served with rice pilaf (gluten free); and

— Vegetarian pasta with sautéed vegetables over penne pasta.

All served with choice of Caesar or house salad, rolls, vegetables, dessert and coffee and tea.

The cost is $70. The ticket purchase deadline is August 25.The departure is 10 a.m. and return is approximately 4 p.m.

Ticket sales are on a first come, first serve basis, payment is required to be placed on all trip lists. Ticket deadlines are in place because of refund policies for both the venue and bus transportation. Tickets will be refunded if a trip gets canceled due to low ticket sales. No refunds otherwise, we do keep a waiting list for all trips.
