Westerlo Library Notes for Thursday, December 27, 2018
The Westerlo Library will be closed on Monday, Dec. 31, and Tuesday, Jan. 1, in celebration of the New Year!
Check out our new hours
Effective January 1, 2019, we will be open 2 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday (no change).
What do I read next?
Or more directly, “How do I figure out what I’ll enjoy reading next?” The easy answer is, “Ask your librarian.” Readers advisory has been a fundamental public library service for over a hundred years. (Yes, we want to talk to you about authors and genres that are similar to your favorites!)
But, what to do when the library is closed? There are several free, online sources. A couple I like are Bookpage.com (we also subscribe to the hardcover edition), and Goodreads.com.
I keep Goodreads on my personal homepage for publication alerts and interesting articles about books and authors. Today (Dec. 24), I’m reading about Iceland’s Jólabókaflóð. That translates to “Christmas Book Flood.”
In Iceland the majority of books are published in late fall. Books are given as presents on Christmas Eve and people spend the night reading.
I certainly can’t think of a better way of celebrating the holidays than with a Flood of Books!
Story time
Join Miss Lee Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon for stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to five years old.
In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.
Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.
Technology Walk-In Wednesdays
Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download digital materials? Need to brush up on your computer skills – or obtain basic skills? See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.
