Westerlo Library Notes for Friday, September 30, 2016
The new memoir writing group will meet on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe place to learn together with people that are accepting and supportive. The group is about creating, not criticism. It is about the practice of remembering and writing. It is not about publishing, polishing or picking out the problems.
Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.
Lila is a founding member of the Capital District Textile Artists group and leads the library quilting group. She also teaches, gives trunk show talks and exhibits in art galleries.
Story time
From 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings Miss Lee presents stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to five years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.
Storytimes are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.
After school
Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music, and a lot more. Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.
Technology
Walk-In Wednesdays
Do you have a new Kindle or Nook, but don’t know how to download books? Need to brush up on your computer skills – or obtain basic skills? See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.
Family game night
Drop in on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. for Family Game Night. Try one of our board games or bring your own. This unstructured program is open to all ages (and you need not be accompanied by a child to participate!).
Anniversary quilt
Help us continue to celebrate the library’s 30th anniversary by sharing the title of your favorite book.
Sponsored by the Westerlo Quilting Group, the first quilted “book shelf” is in the display case. As the titles are added to the quilt, more “shelves” will be added. Eventually, they will all be pieced together to make one wall hanging to mark the library’s 30 years of service to the town of Westerlo.
