Westerlo Library Notes for Tuesday, June 13, 2017

The Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, June 12, at 7 p.m. at the library. This is an open public meeting.

It’s a Dog-Gone Read-A-Thon!

This Saturday, June 10, starting at 9 a.m. stop by the library to read to Lefty and Angus. If the weather's nice, we’ll be outside.

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy that children, all of us, get from simply being around a dog.

Lefty and Angus are registered therapy dogs. Our thanks to Eric Markson and Laura Tenney for volunteering their time and sharing their dogs with us.

Memoir writing group

The Memoir Writing Group will also meet this Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe and supportive place to learn together. Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Town-wide garage sale

The 12th annual town-wide garage sale will be held this Saturday, June 10. The town museum board sponsors this annual event to raise funds for our sister organization, the Westerlo Heritage Museum.

The museum will sell refreshments, baked goods, and maps to sale sites on the day of the sale at the Park Pavilion on County Route 401, 8 a.m. Call Kate at 797-3295 for more information.

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music, and a lot more. Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

STEAM

New!  Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. Miss Lee will present a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math program aimed at a variety of age groups. Each week will feature a different STEAM-based activity with hands-on crafts and demonstrations.

Story time

New!  Due to popular demand, storytime is moving to Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. One Friday per month, Miss Lee will present stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to five years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.
