Westerlo Library Notes for Wednesday, June 5, 2019

This Saturday, June 8, starting at 9 a.m., drop in at the Westerlo Library to read to Lefty and his canine friends, Shorty and George. (If the weather is nice, we’ll be outside.) This is the library’s Third Annual Dog-Gone Read-A-Thon!

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud  or reluctant to read at all — he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy that children — all of us! — get from simply being around a dog.

Lefty, Shorty, and George are registered therapy dogs. Our thanks to Eric Markson and others for volunteering their time and sharing their dogs with us!

Memoir-Writing Group

The Memoir Writing Group will meet this Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe and supportive place to learn together.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcome.

Westerlo Heritage Museum

Town-Wide Garage Sale

The 14th annual town-wide garage sale will also be held this Saturday, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The town museum board sponsors this annual event to raise funds for our sister organization, the Westerlo Heritage Museum.

The museum will sell refreshments, baked goods, and maps to sale sites on the day of the sale at the Westerlo Town Park Pavilion on County Route 401, starting at 8 a.m. Call Diane at 518-966-5829 for more information.

Library trustees meet

The Westerlo Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, June 10, at 7 p.m. in the Hannay Room at the library. This is an open public meeting.

Westerlo Republican Committee meets

The Town of Westerlo Republican Committee will meet on Tuesday, June 11, at 6 p.m. in the Hannay Room at the library. This is an open public meeting.

Lego Club

Drop in on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to play and create with Lego. Lego uses play to open up the world of math, science, and cooperative problem-solving to young minds.

The colorful blocks ignite natural curiosity and build confidence as children bring their ideas to life.  Miss Lee is also available for homework help.

Story time

Join Miss Lee Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon for stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download digital materials? Need to brush up on your computer skills — or obtain basic skills?

See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.
