Voorheesville Library Notes for Thursday, December 29, 2016

As a parent or caregiver of a preschooler, do you ever feel that stress is inhibiting your abilities or that you do not quite know the basics of early child development? On Sunday, Jan. 8 at 3 p.m., the library will welcome Cornell Cooperative Extension, as they present an educational program that will help parents and caregivers understand how stress affects them and their children, and influences their parenting. Parents and caregivers will also understand why they need to know about child development and how they can play a crucial role in nurturing developmental skills in their children. Please register in person, by calling 765-2791 or using our online calendar at http://voorheesvillelibrary.org/calendar

Limited on-site childcare, in the children’s area of the library, will be available for children ages 18 months to 5 years. If you need childcare, please go to www.voorheesvillelibrary.org/calendar and use the on-site childcare registration for the appropriate date, or just call the library at 765-2791, and we will get you registered.

Free screening

The library is very excited to invite you to the first of our Lincoln Center Local: Free Screenings. “Act One,” starring Tony Shalhoub, will be shown at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15. A play written and directed by James Lapine, adapted from the 1959 autobiography by Moss Hart, and filmed at Lincoln Center Theater, “Act One” provides an insight into early 20th Century immigrant life in New York City. Poverty, severe living conditions, limited job opportunities with a backdrop of Broadway during one of its most prosperous periods, all intersect to create an atmosphere in which Moss Hart launched his theatrical career.

Lincoln Center Local: Free Screenings is a program created by Lincoln Center Education and hosted by libraries and community centers. It brings the best of Lincoln Center off its Manhattan-based campus and into communities anywhere. This program provides high-definition film screenings from the growing digital catalog of the world’s leading performing arts center. For more information, please visit LincolnCenter.org/Local. Please register in person, by calling 765-2791 or using our online calendar at http://voorheesvillelibrary.org/calendar

Holiday donation drive

We had a very successful holiday donation drive this year. Thanks to everyone who joined library staff in donating personal care and pet care items. A special thank you to the New Scotland Food Pantry volunteers, who work year-round to insure there is always help available to our neighbors in need.

Fine free days

Start looking for those overdue items now. Overdue Voorheesville Public Library items returned between Monday, Jan. 9 and Sunday, Jan. 15 will be granted amnesty. Sorry, but items from other libraries are not included in this offer.
