Voorheesville Library Notes for Friday, September 9, 2016
The Voorheesville Public Library welcomes Dennis Sullivan on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m., for a historical presentation of the life and work of Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk considered by many to be the most important spiritual writer of the 20th Century.
Dennis’s paper, “The Courage To Be That Self One Truly Is: Thomas Merton's Unrelenting Journey To Recover Paradise On Earth,” will be available at the library for prior reading to facilitate discussion. Please register.
Animal extravaganza
Come explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math through the wonderful world of animals. At 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, we will have fun reading some great animal-themed books during story time, then explore STEAM stations including: Building a bridge for 21 elephants, mixed-up animal art, penguin science, and Lego animal measuring. For kids ages 2 to 5 with caregiver, please register.
Excel basics
Instructor Linda Zell will hold two classes for Excel beginners, both on Monday, Sept. 12. The morning class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and the evening class will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Space is extremely limited, so please register early for either of these hands-on classes. Linda will cover the basics of Microsoft Excel including how to input data into spreadsheets and format that data. The workshops will end with a 30-minute question and answer session.
Beading workshop
This program will run on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., but you may arrive at any time during the workshop that fits your schedule. This program is for adults and teens ages 14 and up. Please register, and there will be a small materials fee.
Fall book sale
The Friends of the Library fall book sale will be held from Sept. 16 through 18. The members-only FOL sneak preview will begin at 2 p.m., on Friday Sept. 16. Memberships are available at the door for as little as $10. Sale doors open to the public at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The kids clothing swap will be held in the community room and a bake sale will be under one of the tents. Nimblefingers crafting group will be available for crafting advice as well as selling homemade items. At 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18 patrons can buy a $2 bag from the FOL and fill it with free books.
Registration for the Village Animal Clinic Canine 5K Classic will begin at 9 a.m., with the run/walk starting at 10 a.m. Music will be provided throughout Saturday and Sunday by local band In Orbit, and Jackie the Magician will be entertaining the crowds on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.
The FOL will also be selling raffle tickets for various items and baskets on display at the book sale. The drawing will be held at noon on Sunday. As always, volunteers are welcome and appreciated.
