Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, August 11, 2021

These are the September book discussion dates at the Voorheesville Public Library:

— Nonfiction Book Discussion: “The Splendid and the Vile” by Erik Larson, 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13;

— Talk & Taste Cookbook Club: “Soup & Comfort: A Cookbook of Homemade Recipes to Warm the Soul” by Pamela Ellgen, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30;

— Fiction Book Discussion: “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15; and

— Books and Beyond: “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Limited copies of the book are available for $5, compliments of the Friends of the Library. Library copies will also be available for checkout and downloadable ebook and audiobook versions are on Overdrive.
 

Take a walk with

Village Historian Sullivan

See the streets of Voorheesville as never before with Village Historian Dennis Sullivan, on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. This two-hour walking tour will begin at Voorheesville Elementary School

 Dennis is the author of the book “Voorheesville, New York: A Sketch of the Beginnings of a Nineteenth-Century Railroad Town.” Registration is required, and limited to 30 people. Attendees must follow all current COVID-19 safety guidelines. Please park at the elementary school parking area. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 25
 

TAG Meeting

Students in grades 7 and up are invited to join TAG, the Teen Advisory Group. Librarian Debbie Sternklar holds occasional TAG meetings in person and/or on Zoom, and surveys members for ideas and input about events and services for middle and high school teens. Please register online for further information, including community service openings. The next meeting will be at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20.
 

Community conversation

Join Dr. Gretchen Sorin, author, and Ric Burns, documentarian, in a lively conversation about their joint project “Driving While Black: Race, Space and Mobility in America.” The documentary, featured on PBS, is based on Dr. Sorin’s book.

Encore!Books

The Friends of the Library used book store is back, and busier than ever. Tentative hours are Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to  6 p.m., and Thursdays, 2 to 5 p.m. Please check the FOL Facebook page for updates and current COVID protocols. Donations are limited to 2 boxes or bags per visit, and will be vetted at the drop off area.

Afternoon Movies

Our Thursday afternoon classic movies are scheduled to resume, beginning at 1 p.m., Oct. 7. Attendance will be very limited, so be sure to get a seat early. Check our online calendar for movie titles, or call for more information.
 

Holiday hours

In observation of the Labor Day holiday, the Library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 6. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
