Voorheesville Library Notes for Friday, May 27, 2016

Back by popular demand, learn how to use basic kitchen appliances to make some extraordinary food. What can you cook for yourself with a waffle maker, microwave, or blender? On Friday, May 27, at 1:30 p.m., we’ll go beyond plain waffles and frozen dinners, so come hungry!  BYOM! (Bring your own mug). Grades six and up, please register.

Story time

Count us in! Have fun at story time with math and magnetic mystery.

Following a short 10:15 a.m. story time, parents and children will explore and play at different stations. Using hands on science, technology, engineering, art, and math, children will develop not only their reading skills but their STEAM skills too. STEAM stations on May 31, Fun with Math will include: cookie counting, fishing for numbers, I Spy Sensory play, button sorting, and counting with Pete the Cat, color block puzzles, and geometric Lego blueprints.

STEAM stations for June 7 include: painting with magnet wands, magnetic slime, magnet powered cars, number fishing, magnetic sorting, and cupcake liner clothespin craft. Please register early for both of these preschool through age 5 programs.

Medicare 101

If you are enrolled in Medicare or will soon be, come to this two-part presentation to learn what Medicare is, what it pays for, and what your contribution will be. Certified Medicare counselor, Janet Kiffney, will answer common questions such as: What is Medicare Part A and Part B? What about prescription coverage? What is the doughnut hole? What is Medigap insurance, and how does it help? Should you think about joining an Advantage Plan? This is a two part program; Part one is Wednesday, June 8, 10 to 11:30 a.m., and part two is Wednesday, June 15, 10 to 11:30 a.m. So much information that we couldn’t fit it into one session, so please plan to attend both. Registration is requested.

SRP kick-off

We have something big planned for our Summer Reading Program Kick-Off this year. Join us at the Performing Arts Center on June 27, for an invigorating and exciting evening of song and dance with nationally acclaimed children’s musician of PBS fame, Steve Roslonek of Steve Songs.

Steve has been writing and performing his award-winning music for kids and families for the past 15 years. Anyone who’s attended a Steve Songs concert appreciates Steve’s ability to connect with his audience —  from the exuberant children flocking towards the stage, to the moms bouncing babies with the beat, to the parents and grandparents singing along. You won’t want to miss this one. This program is made possible with the generous support of the Friends of the Library and the Voorheesville PTA.  The concert will be held at the Lydia C. Tobler Performing Arts Center at the Clayton A. Bouton High School/Middle School.

Holiday hours

In observance of Memorial Day, the library will be closed Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, May 31.
