Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Paint and Sip: Come join in the fun at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 16! No painting experience is needed.

The instructor will take you through step by step. Everything you need is provided to complete a 9-by-12-inch acrylic painting that you can bring home and proudly hang on a wall. The painting will be of dragonflies. Mocktails and dessert will be served.

Sue Sheridan, a Voorheesville resident artist, has been conducting group painting classes for three years.  She was awarded Staff Favorite for a sculpture at the 2018 Fence Show at The Art Center in Troy and spends much of her time in creating mixed media from repurposed items. This event is for people ages 16 and up; please register.

May Magic

Magic the Gathering is the world’s most popular strategy card game. During a match, players cast devastating spells, summon creatures of legend, and wield powerful artifacts to best their opponents in a battle of wits.

Join the fun at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Free decks are available for beginners, come learn to play! Already know how? Come find new opponents. All ages, please register.

World War II Stories through Sketches

Join author and animator William H. Frake III at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, for a discussion about his published collection — “A Moment and A Memory” — of illustrated stories of World War II friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Frake has gathered these “memories” from the men and women who experienced these “moments” as World War II veterans. Several of the World War II veterans featured will be in attendance. Books will be available for sale. Please register.

Planting your outdoor garden

Growing season will be here before we know it, so now is a perfect time to discuss preparing the soil, transplanting seedlings and companion planting. Join gardeners Sharon Miller and Bonnie Schultz at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20 for a talk about starting your outdoor garden.

Peruse the newly stocked seed collection and choose some new varieties to plant. Free tomato seedlings for attendees! Please register. The Voorheesville Seed Library is always looking to add to the collection.  Contact us to find out about donating your extra seeds from last year's harvest.

Origami craft: Animal bookmarks

Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, as we learn the Japanese art of folding paper into adorable animal bookmarks. Supplies will be provided. Welcome to all ages. Please register.

Library closed

In observance of Memorial Day, the library will be closed Saturday, May 25, Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

Early literacy tip

Want your children to read? Let them see you reading! Research shows that children become interested in reading and motivated to learn to read if they see their parents read.
