From 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, kids in kindergarten through eighth grade and their families are invited to join us at the Voorheesville Public Library for a screen-free family fun night

There will be games, reading, storytelling, and minute-to-win-it challenges. Bring a dish to share, and the library will provide beverages and dessert. Please register.

Family Yoga

Join Tricia Kandefar for a free yoga class from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. Designed for children in kindergarten through eighth grade with caregivers. Bring a mat or towel. No yoga experience is necessary. Please register.

“Sammy’s Story”

You are invited to join us at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, for a screening of the powerful documentary, “In the Shadow of Suribachi: Sammy’s Story.” It is a tale of two battles fought by a Jewish World War II Marine, Sammy Bernstein.

The first was the horror of Iwo Jima, the Marine Corps’ bloodiest battle, and the second was Sammy’s struggle with anti-Semitism in the World War II military. The film’s producer and director, Major Joseph Conforti ret. USMC, and Sammy’s son, Howie Bernstein, will facilitate a discussion at the conclusion of the film.

Pete Seeger centennial program

Join us at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, for a very special multimedia lecture and question-and-answer session to celebrate the centennial birthday of beloved folk legend Pete Seeger.

Noted music writer Jesse Jarnow, author of “Wasn’t That a Time: The Weavers, the Blacklist and the Battle for the American Soul,” presents a program enhanced by photo projections and music. Featuring the talents of musician Michael Eck and friends. Presented in partnership with the Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center.

50+: Retirement Reimagined

Are you  over 50? Whether you’re already retired, about to make the move, or just checking out the possibility, join us at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, for this highly interactive workshop. Dr. Tom Denham, of Careers in Transition, will help change the way you think about your life.

Learn the nine reasons to retire and answer key retirement questions. Create an action plan, using your work and life experience and age as an asset for future endeavors.

VPL is a participating public library in the New York State Adult Literacy Grant. The state’s Division of Library Development distributes funds through the Adult Literacy grant to supplement public library systems' Coordinated Outreach Services. The program theme is “Workforce Development at New York Libraries through Public Library Systems.”

Teen volunteer registration

Students entering grades 7 and up can earn community service credit for assisting with summer programs at the library. Please fill out a volunteer form and register for the mandatory orientation online or stop by the Library.
