Schoharie Library Notes for Thursday, April 25, 2019

Kathy Hill Brown will read from and talk about her book, “The Summer Girl,” at the Schoharie Library on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:30 p.m.

“The Summer Girl” follows the adventures of Ruthie, a Jewish girl from Brooklyn, and Sonia, a local girl, as they investigate the crumbling ruins of once-majestic spa hotels.

What mysteries linger in the old hotels around a small spa town in upstate New York? Author Kathy Hill Brown will visit the Schoharie Library on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:30 p.m. to read from and talk about her novel, “The Summer Girl.”

This book follows the adventures of Ruthie, a Jewish girl from Brooklyn, and Sonia, a local girl, as they investigate the crumbling ruins of once-majestic spa hotels.

Ms. Brown lived in Sharon Springs for several years as a child, and the book’s setting was inspired by the town. She remembers peering in the windows of some of the abandoned hotels, seeing what was left behind, and imagining what they had looked like in their heyday.

Every summer, she saw the Hasidic Jewish families arriving from New York City, and hoped one of the children might become a playmate. At that time, the summer visitors and locals rarely mingled, so she never had the opportunity to make friends as Sonia and Ruthie did. As an adult, she wondered, “What if...?” and the story began to take form.

On Tuesday, Ms. Brown of Berne, a former Altamont enterprise reporter, will share stories of the fascinating historical background to her book, as well as pictures of some of the hotels. She will also have books available to sign.

This event is part of Children’s Book Week. It is free of charge and all ages are welcome. The Schoharie Library is located at 103 Knower Avenue in Schoharie.
