Schoharie Library Notes for Thursday, February 28, 2019

“How does a prisoner of war become a spy? And why? And what is a galco?” These are some of the central questions driving the plot of “Parabellum: When You Live in Peace, Prepare for War” by local author Jack Nanuq.

The Schoharie Library hosted the author for a book-signing on Feb. 16. He read a chapter of his mystery thriller to an enthusiastic audience, and spoke of how he came to write it, as well as the process of writing and publishing.

Nanuq said that a conversation with someone whose grandfather was a POW on the Isle of Man during World War I sparked the idea, but the story is wholly his own creation.

Set partly in circa-2000 upstate New York, and partly in World War I-era Isle of Man, the book follows Carson Nowak, a CIA contractor, as he explores his great-grandmother’s thorny past as a refugee and prisoner of war during the world wars. Nana’s secrets, however, are more dangerous than he guessed, and Carson’s personal and professional lives collide as Nana’s enemies close in.

Jack Nanuq will be celebrating the launch of his novel with a party at the Duanesburg YMCA  on Saturday, March 2, from noon to 2 p.m. “Parabellum” is available at this event, and at www.amazon.com.

Story time

The theme for the story time is Dr. Seuss on Friday, March 1, at 10 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome to join us for stories, music, crafts, and games. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Writing Club

On Mondays, March 4 and 18, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. join  writers of all ages are welcome! Bring your fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or any other type of writing to share, discuss, and critique.

Celebration

Celtic Celebration with Ariel and Iona Troupe on Friday, March 8, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Listen to stories from Wales, Scotland, and Ireland and snuggle with Ariel the dog! Iona Troupe Irish Dancers will perform at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

On Tuesday,s March 12 and 26 from 10:30 a.m. to noon bring a project, start something new, learn with materials from the library! All are welcome.

Drawing

Life Drawing Classes with Joel Bramer on Monday, March 18, Thursday, March 21, and Monday March 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. Learn how to draw the human figure with a live (clothed) model!
