Middleburgh Library Notes for Thursday, August 4, 2022
As part of our summer reading program, we’ll talk about “Sammy Keyes and the Killer Cruise” by Wendelin Van Draanen on Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Middleburgh Library.
Secret codes! Clues! Delicious red herrings! A classic whodunit on the high seas, where Sammy and her dad find themselves in some seriously shark-infested waters. Read the book and get ready to talk about it and do some sleuthing of your own.
You'll get to keep the paperback copy of the book. Registration is required. This program, for kids going into grades 4 to 6, is part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
Treasure hunt
On Aug. 9 at 10:45 a.m., we’re going on a summer-reading Treasure Hunt Story Time. The pirates lost their treasure and we’re going to find it! We’ll be having lots of fun as we read books, sing, and go hunting for the treasure chest!
Registration is required. This program, for parents and caregivers and little ones ages 1 to 5, is also part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
Mahjong
Mahjong is back at the Middleburgh Library. Come and join the group on Aug. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. If you don’t know how to play and want to learn, the group will help you.
Family matinée
A Summer Reading Family Matinee will be held on Aug. 9 at 1 p.m., screening the film, “A Turtle’s Tale,” which is not rated. When it’s hot outside, come inside the cool library and watch a fun afternoon film with your family.
A sea turtle hatched in 1959 spends the next 50 years swimming the oceans, searching for the love of his life, and watching how global warming changed the planet. Free popcorn! No registration is required. This program, too, is part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
Kraken Attack!
Kraken Attack! — at 1 p.m. and then again at 2:30 p.m., and again at 4 p.m., all on Aug. 10 — is part escape room and part scavenger hunt. Teams of four will work together to solve the puzzles and get out of danger.
After miles of sailing on the calm sea, you spot this enormous black cloud approaching rapidly. You try to steer the boat away, but the waves are violently hitting the hull. Out of nowhere, tentacles emerge from the water, dragging the boat into a deep whirlpool to the bottom of the sea.
Will you escape from this violent storm before it’s too late? Hold your breath! Registration is required. This program, for kids going into grade 3 to 5, is part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program. Join our waiting list.
Teen Castaways
As part of Teen Thursdays, teens can come to the Bermuda Triangle Escape Room on Aug. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. You’re invited on a non-stop flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. We’ll be flying over the Bermuda Triangle — can we make it through without disappearing?
Registration is required. This program, for kids ages 12 through 12th grade, is part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
Afternoon Tea & Books
On Aug. 11 at 1 p.m., join our book club for a spirited discussion of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” and enjoy tea and treats while we talk. For a copy of the book, please order online through your library account or call 518-827-5142 and we will request a copy for you. No registration is required.
“A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith is set in 1912, and tells the story of Francie Nolan. She lives with her family in a tenement house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The book opens on a Saturday afternoon when Francie goes to collect junk for pennies. Her neighborhood is filled with people who love each other and spend their time together happily. Although they live among poor families, the Nolans are happy because they are surrounded by love and warmth from friends and family members.
“Murder on the Titanic”
In a summer reading program for adults, we’ll take on “Murder on the Titanic” on Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. Come on board the Titanic as we sail off onto new adventures. There will be drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and a murder — are you the murderer, a suspect, or the victim? Dress up or come as yourself!
Registration is required. This program, for adults 18 and over, is part of our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program.
