Middleburgh Library Notes for Wednesday, July 24, 2019
During July and August, Mahjong Mania meets on Monday afternoon — including on July 29 — from 1:30 to 5 p.m., as a spirited group of people get together in the Community Room of the Middleburgh Library to play Mahjong.
Don’t know how to play? No problem! They will teach you how. No registration is required.
Escape Room
On July 29, from 5:30-8 p.m. join us for Harry Potter Escape Room. How well do you know the Harry Potter series? You and your team must navigate the room and complete the clues in order to find your lost Hogwarts Express ticket and catch your train to Can you escape the room? This program is for kids going into 6th grade and up.
Storytime
On July 30 at 10:45 a.m. come and enjoy Drop-in Storytime. This fun and interactive program is meant for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers, although older siblings are always welcome! We read books, sing songs, play games, dance and watch a short movie based on a weekly theme. No registration is required!
Fun with Fibers
On July 30 at 1 p.m. join the fun and weave a circular wall hanging for your room, felt a little pouch, and experience weaving on a floor loom to create a collaborative piece for the library. These are some of the things we will be doing in the Fun With Fibers Class this summer. A variety of yarns, rovings and other materials will be used in these projects, along with weaving and felting techniques. This program is appropriate for kids going into 6th grade.
Insight Meditation
On July 30 at 5:15 p.m. join us for Insight Meditation. What do you want most deeply Seeing your life calmly and clearly helps answer this. Insight Meditation is a simple way to steady your mind, stop wandering in day-dreams, and end the suffering of troubling thoughts. Our group is a place to sit quietly in safety, supported by others; to allow understanding and compassion to arise; to encourage loving-kindness and patience. We welcome those with no experience to advanced mediators', teens to seniors. give it a try. No registration is required. There is no fee. All are welcome.
Space Travel with Mad Science of the Capital District
On July 31 at 1 p.m. join mad scientists from Mad Science of the Capital District as they teach us about space travel. We will learn about the propulsion systems employed for space travel and participate in multiple hands-on experiments designed to introduce you to the concepts of thrust, propulsion, action/reaction, aerodynamics, rocket construction, the stages of rocket flight, and more. Then you'll get to launch a rocket outside - yay! Registration is required. For kids going into grades 2 to 5.
Teen Murder Mystery
On July 31 at 6 p.m. Teen Murder Mystery - Oh No! Ms.Terry is stuck as a ghost, until we figure out who killed her and with what she will be stuck. Please join us for a mystery dinner while we discover clues on who killed Ms.Terry and we try to release her from the prisons of being a ghost and bring her back to life! Come prepared to use your brain and have fun! Registration is required. This program is for teens going into grades 6 through 12.
Storytime
On Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. There's no place like Space storytime. Join Miss Terry in this special storytime about space! We'll read books, sing songs and have some parachute play all about outer space. We'll conclude by stuffing our very own purple alien friend (think build-a-bear) for you to take home. This program is for kids going into preschool through first grade. Registration is required and space is limited.
Personal Planetariums
On Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. join environmental educator, George Steele, as we learn all about the night sky and make a personal planetarium to be able to see several well know constellations. This program is for kids going into grades 2 to 5. Registration is required.
Journals
On Aug. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. come and enjoy Crafts in the Carriage House: Handmade Journals (Best House). Keeping personal diaries and journals dates as far back as the Middle Ages. Throughout the 19th Century scrapbooking as we know it, began to emerge. First put together by adults, scrapbooks were created as a way of organizing their collections, ranging from pressed flowers to art prints and from shells to insects.
Today, many of us keep personal journals, scrapbooks, photo albums and sketch books as a way of collecting or recording personal thoughts, experiences, and memories. Join us in this 2- hour workshop to create a small handmade book that can be used as a garden journal, scrapbook, personal journal, photo album, or whatever your creative mind chooses.
