Middleburgh Library Notes for Friday, July 20, 2018

A book sale is now going on at the library in the foyer. We have children's, juniors, young adult and adult books. All books are .25 each. Great time to stock up your home library.

Mahjong Mania

On July 23 come and enjoy Mahjong Mania. Every Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. a spirited group of people get together in the Community Room to play Mahjong. Don't know how to play? No problem! They will teach you how. No registration required.

Libraries Rock

On July 23 join us for a Family Sing-Along Movie Party with "Moana" rated G. Here's your chance to burst into song in the library! Belt out your favorite songs from Moana and enjoy bags filled with props and treats to interact with the movie. Beach attire encouraged! This program is for kids going into kindergarten on up and their families. Registration is required.

Then on July 24, at 10:45 a.m. get ready to move in this interactive storytime designed especially for children up to age 5 and their caregivers. We'll read books, sing songs, recite fingerplays, dance and watch a short movie based on a weekly theme. No registration required.

On July 24 and 26 at 1 p.m. come join the fun in creating a one-of-a-kind journal for personal use or as a very special gift. In this two-part class you will learn to make a handmade journal/scrapbook/sketchbook. You will be creating the cover papers using several surface treated paper techniques. The pages will be bound using the Japanese Stab binding method.  The pages and covers will be embellished using various materials such as stickers, beads and decorative punches and papers. Registration required. This program is for kids going into grade six and up.

Also on July 24, 25, and 26 at 4 p.m. join us for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Immersion Camp. We are partnering with Signum University to offer our first fantasy immersion camp as we read and study “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone” by J. K. Rowling. If you've already read the book — great. If you haven't grab yourself a copy! You'll read the book at home and participant in interactive discussions about what you've read online with professors from the University. We'll meet three times a week and talk about the book and participate in some fun, creative activities.  This will be a great way to delve deeper into one of our favorite fantasy novels. This program is for kids going into grade five through eight. Registration is required.

July 25, at 1 p.m. come be part of Terrific Turtles, join the Children's Museum of Science and Technology and meet a turtle from CMOST’s living collection. Learn about turtle habitats and make an art project to take home. This program is for kids going into kindergarten through second grade.  Registration is required.

On July 25 at 2:30 p.m. the library presents Rocks Rock with the help of educators from the Children's Museum of Science and Technology, children will learn about rock classification (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) in the context of the rock cycle. They will have the opportunity to handle rock samples and learn how these rocks are used. For added fun, each child will receive a geode to keep and break open at home. Students use real scientific tests to identify rocks. This program is part of our Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program and is for kids going into grades three through five. Registration is required.

7/26 - 1:00 PM - Hooting it up with Owls - This event is part of our Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program and is appropriate for kids going into 2nd grade through 5th grade.  Registration is required.

7/24 - 5:15 PM - Insight Meditation -   What do you want most deeply? Seeing your life calmly and clearly helps answer this.  Insight Meditation is a simple way to steady your mind, stop wandering in day-dreams, and end the suffering of troubling thoughts.  Our group is a place to sit quietly in safety, supported by others; to allow understanding and compassion to arise; to encourage loving-kindness and patience.  We welcome those with no experience to advanced mediators', teens to seniors. give it a try. No registration is required. There is no fee. All are welcome.

On July 25 from 2 to 3 p.m. join us for Teen Maker Wednesday. Create, make and explore at Makerspace in the Village. Join us in the tech room every Wednesday starting July 11 through Aug. 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Take note there will not be a Makerspace held on Aug. 8.

This program is appropriate for teens. Registration is required.

On July 26 at 1 p.m. come enjoy Hooting it up with Owls. This event is appropriate for kids going into second grade through fifth grade. Registration is required.

On July 27 at 1 p.m. join us for Families Making Music. Come make music with us as we make and create our own musical instruments out of new and recycled materials! We'll have stations set up for different instruments and in the end, we can all try them out and see how much noise we can make!!

This program is appropriate for kids ages three and up and their families. Registration is required.

Finally on July 27, at 6 p.m. Family Dance at the Dr. Best House. Put on your dancing shoes because Paul Rosenberg and Homespun Occasions are coming to Middleburgh to lead a fun-filled family dance party on the lawn (or barn if it rains!) at the Dr. Best House. Circle dances, squares, line dances and play-party/singing games from the US and around the world will be taught.  We'll also learn about the varied traditional instruments and music being played. Fun for young and old! This program is for all ages. Registration is suggested.

Knitting Circle

On July 26 at 7 p.m. the friendly ladies (men are welcome, but we haven't seen any yet!) knit and crochet, embroider and quilt, and more. You can learn a new skill here or share your own special talents with others- or just craft in the company of friends. Drop in anytime! No registration is required.
