Middleburgh Library Notes for Thursday, March 15, 2018

On Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to noon come to the library to about Chainsaw Safety - An Introduction. Chainsaws are among the most useful and dangerous outdoor power tools owned and operated by landowners. Severe injuries include deep, jagged lacerations embedding foreign substances resulting from direct contact with the chainsaw; strains and sprains from improper handling; and contusions concussions and/or fractures caused by being struck by objects while cutting. Improper long-term use may result in loss of hearing and diminished nerve sensitivity. The use, storage, and transportation of potentially hazardous materials necessary for chainsaw operation increases the risk of injury. While all danger cannot be eliminated, training and instruction have proven to be an effective way to mitigate the risk of harm to a chainsaw user.

Mike Burns from Professional Forestry Services will present an instructional program for the occasional chainsaw user on safe operation and risk mitigation. This session is intended to be an introduction to chainsaw use and is not adequate preparation for felling standing trees. Participants will not be using a chainsaw as part of the workshop. This workshop is free and is underwritten by New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health. Registration is required.

Concert

On Sunday, March 18 at 4 p.m. join us for a concert with Mike Agranoff. He is a master of the little-known English Concertina, applying it anywhere from a haunting and poignant song accompaniment to an unexpected virtuoso transcription of a Bach concerto. A performance might include a song of heart-stopping emotional impact, a Scott Joplin piano rag, an acapella Irish patter song sung to the melody of a mile-a-minute fiddle tune, a riveting recitation in the style of Robert Service, and some of the most horrible parodies ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting audience.  A $10 donation is suggested. Tickets are available at the door.
