Middleburgh Library Notes for Thursday, February 15, 2018

The Middleburgh Library will be closed on Feb. 19 to observe Presidents’ Day.

Story time

Drop-in Story Time starts at 10:45 a.m. on Feb. 20. Get ready to move in this interactive story time designed especially for children up to age 5 and their caregivers. We’ll read books, sing songs, recite fingerplays, dance, and watch a short movie based on a weekly theme. No registration is required.

At 11 a.m., we’ll celebrate Clifford’s birthday.

Mahjong Mania

Every Tuesday afternoon, including Feb. 20, at 1 p.m., a spirited group of people get together in the Community Room to play Mahjong.

Don’t know how to play? No problem! They will teach you how. No registration is required.

Insight Meditation

Join us at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 20 for a simple group Azaen meditation practice. All are welcome.

This is a place to sit still in safety, to allow understanding and compassion to arise, to cultivate loving kindness and acceptance. Sitting here patiently in the unfolding of our community will help transform our world.

All are welcome. No registration is required.

Book talk

On Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., we’ll talk about “People of the Book” by Geraldine Brooks. Inspired by a true story, the novel was called “a tour de force” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The book traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding — an insect-wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair — only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

Hanna Heath is unexpectedly plunged into the intrigues of fine-art forgers and ultra-nationalist fanatics.  No registration is required.

Story time

Join master storyteller, Doreen McCoy, for a fun story time on Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. with stories, fingerplays, songs, and a craft for little ones 2 years old and up with their caregivers. No registration is required.

Crafty Morning: Beaded Jewelry

Join us on Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for another installment of our popular beaded jewelry class. Get your creativity flowing as you learn to create your own jewelry by stringing beads.

Create a necklace, earrings, or bracelet — or all three! All materials will be provided. Refreshments will be served. This program is appropriate for adults and teens age 13 and up. Registration is required.

Family film

On Feb. 21 at 1 p.m., we’ll screen “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” which tells the story of six young ninjas — Lloyd, Jay, Kai, Cole, Zane, and Nya — who are tasked with defending their island home, called Ninjago.

By night, they’re gifted warriors, using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they’re ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy: high school.

No registration is required and we’ll serve free popcorn.

Knitting Circle

On Feb. 22 at 7 p.m., Friendly ladies (men are welcome, but we haven’t seen any yet!) will knit and crochet, embroider and quilt, and more. You can learn a new skill here or share your own special talents with others — or just craft in the company of friends.

Drop in anytime. No registration is required.
