Guilderland Library Notes for Tuesday, December 24, 2019

Teresa Broadwell and her jazz quintet will perform at the Guilderland Public Library’s Cabaret Night on Friday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited, so registration online, by phone, or in person is required.

Settle in for post-holiday chill as we present a mega Marvel Movie Marathon on Friday, Dec. 27. First up on our big screen is “Guardians of the Galaxy” at 11 a.m., followed by “Black Panther” at 1:30 p.m., and “Thor: Ragnarok” at 4:30 p.m. All movies are rated PG-13, and popcorn is provided!

Missing Piece Board Game Club

We have the games, we have the snacks — what’s missing? You!

Join us for the inaugural session of our twice-a-month adult Missing Piece Board Game Club, Saturday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Bring your favorite games to this meetup, or play one from our collection of 100+ board games. We’ll provide treats and the biggest table you've ever seen! No registration needed.  

Magical Frozen Party

Looking for a fun event to bring your kids to on New Year’s Eve day? Look no further than our Magical Frozen Party!

Costumes are encouraged as we celebrate our favorite Frozen characters with family-friendly activities, karaoke and a sweet treat on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.

Please note that the library will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and is closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s Day.

We’re Streaming!

New Year, new streaming service! We’re excited to announce that starting in January, your Guilderland library card grants you access to streaming videos from RBDigital.

Watch your favorite BBC shows on AcornTV, independent films on IndieFlix, a concert from your favorite musician on Qello, or learn something new with the Great Courses! Check our website for information, or stop at the Information Desk for print resources. Sign up for a one-on-one session with a librarian expert to take full advantage, and bring your library card and a mobile device to the appointment.

Mead visits

Baseball fans are in for a treat as president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Tim Mead visits us on Monday, Jan. 6 at 10 a.m.  Prior to assuming leadership in Cooperstown, Mr. Mead spent 40 years on staff for the Los Angeles Angels.

He’ll cover the upcoming Hall of Fame elections and his experiences working with three Angels owners, including Gene Autry and Arte Moreno, as well as two of the greatest players in baseball history, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. He’ll also field your questions on all things baseball during this special visit.

2020 Vision Boards

New Year’s resolutions are often fleeting — what are the goals you’re committed to accomplishing in the coming year? Make the most of this fresh start on Monday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. with a fun craft that puts your aspirations into visual context and constantly at top of mind.

You’ll create a colorful collage for year-long inspiration. This is an all-ages activity; families are welcome.  Please register online, by phone or in person.

Little Lego Club

Children in grades Kindergarten through grade 3 are welcome to join our Little Lego Club on Monday, Jan. 6 at 3:30 p.m. Use your imagination for creative individual and collaborative play. Feel free to use the library's collection, or bring your own bricks. For younger children, we offer Duplo.

Internet safety

The internet has drastically changed how we interact with the world. It’s important to be mindful of cyber risks and learn how to combat these threats.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m., staff from the New York State Division of Homeland Security will provide an informative overview on common cyber threats, plus tips and tricks to maintain a safe and secure presence online.  

Knuffle Bunny

Join us for a fun-read aloud and related art project on Friday, Jan. 10 at 3:30 p.m. as we share the heartwarming story of Knuffle Bunny. This program is for kids in prekindergarten through second grade, and registration is required. Be sure to dress for a mess!

GPL Cabaret

Mark your calendar for the next installment of our GPL Cabaret – Friday, Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. This after-hours special evening performance of jazz standards will feature the wonderful stylings of vocalist Teresa Broadwell and her quintet of musicians.

Relax with a glass of wine, hors d'oeuvres, and soothing music. Please register for this program online, by phone or in person, as space is limited. Also, bring a photo I.D. if you're planning to enjoy a glass of wine.
