Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, December 11, 2019

Cookies of various types will be exchanged at the Guilderland Public Library on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. based on Martha Stewart’s “Cookie Perfection” cookbook.  Participants are asked to register and choose one or two recipes from this cookbook in advance.

Children in pre-kindergarten through second grade are invited to join us at the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, Dec. 13, at 3:30 p.m. for a fun read-aloud and snowman-related art project. Please dress for a mess, and register online, by phone, or in person

Better Books Sale

It’s time for our monthly extravaganza of deals galore on books, DVDs and CDs on Saturday,  Dec. 14, 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Carve out some time during this busy season to indulge yourself in some terrific (and frugal) treasures!

“Bear Snores On”

On Saturday,  Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m., WMHT’s Barbara Lukas returns to present “Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson. We’ll meet Bear, who lives in the forest with his friends.

Bear’s friends try to wake him up from his long winter slumber, but it’s tough to do while he’s “hi-bear-nating.” We’ll make a craft together after we enjoy the story.

This program is ideal for kids in pre-kindergarten through second grade. Please register online, by phone, or in person.  

Saturday STEAM

Hands-on learning incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math forms the basis of our Saturday STEAM program. It’s also great fun!

Connect with your inner scientist on Saturday,  Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. as we explore the world of mixtures and density, including interactive activities like self-inflating balloons and density towers. For grades 2 to 5.  Please register online, by phone or in person.  

Cookie Exchange

This month’s edition of Cookbook Club is all about cookies! Martha Stewart’s latest, “Cookie Perfection,” offers more than 100 recipes sure to make any celebration a real treat.

Come to the library, choose your recipe from the book on display at the Adult Reference Desk. Then on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., bring your cookies to share. Everyone will get a box to mix and match and bring home a delectable assortment. Please register online, by phone, or in person.  

Ukulele Jam

Meeting with music-minded folks is a great way to relax and unwind.  Ukulele players of all skill levels are welcome are on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Whether you are just getting started or are a seasoned pro, join our jam sessions and have a bit of fun. Bring your own ukulele, or check one out from us!  No registration required, just drop in.

Trustees meet

The Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees will conduct their monthly business meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.  All are welcome to attend. For your convenience, these meetings are also streamed live on the library’s Facebook page.  

‘Tis the season

…for a ukulele sing-along!  On Friday, Dec. 20 at 11 a.m., we’ll strum along to some fun wintry favorites, ring bells and enjoy some hot chocolate (with marshmallows, of course). No registration required, just drop in for a jolly good time!

Suburban Sounds Concert

If you’re not quite into the holiday mood just yet, you will be after you hear the uplifting melodies produced by the Suburban Sounds Community Chorus! 

This four-part harmony chorus will perform their winter concert, “Songs for the Season” on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.  Make a point to take a break from the hustle-bustle and revel in the merriment.

Please note the library will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 1.  We will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Our large screen in the Helderberg will feature the family favorite “Toy Story 4” on Thursday, Dec. 26, at 6:30 p.m. Then on Friday, Dec. 27, settle in for a Marvel Movie Marathon (all rated PG-13) as we show “Guardians of the Galaxy” at 11 a.m.; “Black Panther” at 1:30 p.m.; and “Thor: Ragnarok” at 4:30 p.m.  

Help wanted 

The Guilderland Public Library is currently seeking a volunteer treasurer. This independent officer reports directly to our board of trustees and is responsible for the receipt and disbursement of tax monies with board approval.

Typical duties are expected to take three to five hours per month. Interested candidates with financial expertise are encouraged to contact board President Bryan Best at: 518-265-4432 or bestb@guilderlandlibrary.org.
