Several opportunities for teens are available at the Guilderland Public Library this summer, including technology volunteering, Read it Forward, and a virtual escape room event on Thursday, Aug. 5, at 2:00 or 3:30 p.m.

What does it take to complete the Iditarod — the grueling annual Alaskan dog sled race covering almost 1,000 miles?

Watch this family / all ages virtual program on Monday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. with veteran dog musher, Karen Land, and her two beautiful dogs, Noggin and Chloe, to find out, as part of our “Tails and Tales” summer reading program.

As a bonus, we have a very limited supply of free children’s books (preschool to grade 2 or grade 3 to 5 levels) to give away prior to this program. Supplies are limited; one book per child. Please register on the Events tab of our website to receive the Zoom link on the day of the program, plus the free book.

New café

An inviting new café in the front area of our building (formerly the Normanskill Room) is taking shape. We're looking forward to having a new gathering space for all to enjoy refreshments and conversation this fall, and are looking for a tenant to operate it. Please see https://bit.ly/GPLCafeRFPs  for more information. The deadline for RFPs is Wednesday, Aug. 11 at noon. We appreciate any and all interest in this endeavor.

Golf tourney

Tee time is fast approaching! All skill levels are invited for a low-key day of fun as Guilderland Library Foundation hosts a golf tournament at Western Turnpike Golf Course on Friday, Aug. 13.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by shotgun start at 9 a.m., lunch, and 19th hole celebration at 2 p.m. The cost is $125 per golfer, or $25 to attend the 19th hole afternoon celebration only.  Registration closes Aug. 1. Virtual Craft and Chat

What are you working on?  Need new ideas?  Join our craft-centered discussion Thursday, July 29 at 6 p.m.!  We'd love to chat, share tips, maybe even inspire one another.  Whether you knit, stitch, sketch, paint — whatever craft you dabble in — let’s talk!  We'll meetup online via Zoom, and you’ll receive an email with login details in advance. Register on the Events tab of our website to reserve your spot.

Tomatoes 101

One of the most-prized garden rewards is a juicy, ripe tomato. There’s so much you can do with this versatile pantry staple.  On Wednesday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m., learn how to safely hot pack crushed tomatoes and make salsa with Karen Roberts Mort from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County, one of our favorite presenters.

We’ll cover the basics of canning in a boiling water canner, including equipment needed.  This program will be held in-person at the Tawasentha Park small pavilion.  Space is limited; registration and masks required.

Construction update

We’re on budget and 11 months ahead of schedule with our extensive building project.  Completion is expected around Labor Day. More details may be found at: https://bit.ly/GPLbuildingproject. Due to limited interior space from construction plus social distancing constraints, GPL is not currently open to public browsing.
