Ah — sunny days ahead poolside, at the beach, lake, or just chilling in the backyard with a book or reading device in hand — that’s our idea of a perfect summer day. You too?

As long as you’re reading anyway, why not try to win fabulous prizes too?

Summer reading is for all ages! There’s something for everyone, from infancy through adulthood. Preschoolers through high schoolers are encouraged to enjoy books, complete activities, attend programs, earn points, and win prizes.

Teens can serve as GPL technology volunteers this summer and participate in Read It Forward. Adults can register their reading for a chance to win a grand prize gift basket and $50 gift card from The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, plus other prizes.

Any format counts — print, audiobook or eBook; short story, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, graphic novel. The goal is simple: Read!

Families: Make sure to check our Events calendar at guilderlandlibrary.org frequently and register. Sign-up for specific activities is available two weeks in advance, and each week features a different theme.

The summer reading Program officially kicks off with Farm Week, starting Tuesday, July 6, featuring an activity kit for kids in grades 3 to 5 with all the materials needed to create your very own farm animal play set, and a family/all ages farm tour at Indian Ladder Farms on Thursday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m.  Subscribe to our YouTube channel for a variety of engaging story times, too!

More summer reading details for kids and teens may be found at:  https://guilderlandlibrary.org/srp and on our GPL Kids and Families Facebook page. For adult information, go to:  https://guilderlandlibrary.org/adultsrp.

Lower-maintenance

perennials

Love the look of a lush flower-filled garden and a classic border with three seasons of continuous bloom, but not the work involved?  This online talk on Tuesday, July 13 at 9:30 a.m. is for you! We’ll cover the basics of lower-maintenance gardening, including planning, simplifying and editing plantings and choosing the right plants and shrubs for your site.

Examples of lower-maintenance gardens and plant lists will be provided as well. This program is presented by Judith Fetterly, master gardener and owner of Perennial Wisdom, in collaboration with Albany Guardian Society. Please register on the Events tab of our website; AGS will email the link in advance of the program.

Fermenting foods

One of our favorite presenters, Food and Nutrition Educator Karen Roberts Mort from Cornell Cooperative Extension–Albany County, returns for a Tawasentha Park program on Tuesday, July 13 at 6 p.m. We’ll learn about the long history and health benefits of fermented foods, and make small batches of sauerkraut and kimchi at the small pavilion. Space is limited; masks are required. Please register on the Events tab of our website, or call 518-456-2400 ext. 3.
