Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Erica Salamida, program manager for the Capital Region North chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York, presents the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Series, two important programs for people caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia at the Guilderland Public Library. These programs are for you, the caregiver, providing techniques that will assist you helping the person you’re caring for, and taking care of yourself, as well.

Partnering with your

doctor

On Monday, June 9, at 3 p.m., the library will have Partnering with Your Doctor. A practical and informative discussion about how to make your doctor visits as satisfying and productive as possible.  This program is ideal for people with early stage Alzheimer’s disease, as well as friends and family who care for or interact with people who have AD.  Please call us at 456-2400, ext. 2 to register.

A good visit

How to Have a Good Visit, is being held on Monday, June 16, at 3 p.m., this program gives you helpful tips about visiting a loved one in a long-term care facility. You’ll learn about forming realistic expectations, planning what to do during visits, and making your visits enjoyable for all.  If you visit elders in residential facilities, this program is highly recommended. Please call 456-2400, ext 2 to register.

Advance care planning

Decisions about how you would like to live and be cared for, particularly at the end of life, are some of the most personal  and difficult  to make.  Join us for Advance Care Planning: Your Decisions, Your Choices on Thursday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m., for help forming those decisions.

The most important first step is to have open and honest conversations with loved ones about your wishes, preferably before a health care crisis occurs. Patricia Spreitzer, Community Nurse Liaison for The Community Hospice, will present this important education program, designed to provide information and resources to assist you in having the conversation.

You’ll gain an understanding of the process of designating a health care agent, an individual you select to represent you in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. You’ll also learn about the appropriate Advance Directive documents you’ll want to complete to help ensure that your wishes are followed. To register, call 456-2400, ext. 2, or register online.

You can be a part of record-making history on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m., at GPL, when you add your voice to the nationwide group-sing of our National Anthem.

This event celebrates the 200th anniversary of the nation’s most iconic symbol, the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired our National Anthem.

Cities, towns, and organizations across the country are taking part simultaneously in this Smithsonian-sponsored event.  At the stroke of 4 p.m., eastern standard time we will raise our voices as one country to celebrate E Pluribus Unum, “out of many, one.”

If the weather is nice, we will sing the anthem at the flagpole in front of the library; if it’s not so nice, we will hold the sing indoors in the Helderberg Room.

Song sheets will be given out. Should you desire, you can leave your name and address to receive a certificate attesting to your participation.  Refreshments will be served.

Chat with your

assemblywoman

GPL is hosting Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy’s Afternoon Tea and Conversation on Friday, June 6, at 4 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to share your ideas and concerns with the assemblywoman, and visit the library for all your reading, research, and entertainment needs.

This event is, of course, free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served, so stop by, chat a bit, and enjoy.  See you there.

First Friday’s fantastic film

You have lots of friends, but you probably don’t have any super buddies who have powers such as the ones you’ll see on Friday, June 6, at 7 p.m., when Disney’s super buddy flick is shown in the Helderberg Room.

See an ordinary day at Fernfield Farms turn extraordinary when Budderball, Mudbud, B- Dawg, Buddha, and Rosebud discover mysterious rings that grant them each a unique superpower. Before you can say ‘Buddies, assemble!’ the pups unleash their amazing abilities and race to the rescue when a shape-shifting bully from outer space threatens the planet.  All that, and free popcorn, too.
