Guilderland Library Notes for Thursday, May 29, 2014

The Guilderland Public Library is hosting a couple of social events shortly, where you’ll get to share your thoughts with local community leaders.  Please feel free to stop by the library, chat, and share what’s on your mind.

Tim Wiles, GPL’s recently appointed director, is holding a Meet the Director social on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 until 7 p.m.

Wiles’s been on the job since January, and has been on a whirlwind tour of getting to know the library and the staff, and now he wants to meet you, and hear your thoughts on how GPL can better serve the community.

The other event is Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy’s afternoon tea and conversation on Friday, June 6, at 4 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to share your ideas and concerns with the assemblywoman, and visit the library for all your reading, research, and entertainment needs.

Both events are, of course, free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served, so stop by, chat a bit, and enjoy. See you there.

Free apps for grownups

If you want to learn about some cool “apps,” applications that run on everything from smartphones to tablet computers,  that can actually do you some good, then come to  Fun & Free Apps for Grownups at GPL on Wednesday, June 4, at 2 p.m.

You’ll find out about apps for productivity and creativity, education, and lifestyle, news and navigation, and finance, and food and drink. And, yes, a collection of games, too. Word to the wise: “Scramble” will humble your friends or you. The conversation covers both Apple and Android apps. You’ll also learn where to find reliable reviews of apps. Bring your mobile device, and favorite apps to share.

Classic film

Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, about an oppressive American society where books are banned and firemen torch tomes, was turned into an award-winning sci-fi thriller. This 1966 classic film will be shown at GPL on Thursday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m., in the Helderberg Room.

The birds and the bees in your backyard

Landscaping with native plants is an excellent way to attract more birds to your yard, and do some good for the environment, and doing so is the subject of Native Plants in Your Backyard: Bringing Back Birds, Bees, and Butterflies at GPL on Saturday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m.

In her illustrated talk, Professor Sigrin Newell discusses the reasons for choosing native plants, and the best places to plant them. She will show pictures of a variety of good choices, and will give you take-home information on sources for native plants, as well as a listing of websites and books that can help further your understanding of the subject.
